Other Characters: Roy Mustang

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Valgaav
Age: Unknown, but he does pretty much act like a teenager and given that he was originally a dragon, he's well over the age of 18 and probably closer to 1000 years old. The important thing is that he looks young-adult and acts like a stupid angry teenager.
Canon: Slayers TRY (which is the third season of the series)
Canon Point: Episode 13 - after the confrontation in his base when he teleports to go summon Darkstar.
Character Information: His page on the Kanzaka wiki

And because it's likely relevant: The page on the Mazoku/Monster race

Personality:

He often boasts of his power and strength, to the point where insinuating that he is weak can be an easy enough in-road to manipulating him through his stubborn pride. He's very pointedly someone who refuses to let slights against him die and will continually try to get up if knocked down in a fight, even if it's outright suicidal for him to keep trying. To put it another way, he really does not seem to know the meaning of the word 'die' in contexts where it's applied directly to him or to his actions.

He's very easily goaded and taunted into a fit of rage. Over the course of his fight sequences, he regularly succumbs to taunts and can be very easily baited into taking that first strike at someone - particularly if one of his nerves is struck in just the right way. Which, between playing to his ego or playing to that vengeful streak of his, there really are more than a few ways to get him to do what you want through pushing his buttons - even if it is ambiguous how long he'll continue to do so.

For all that he's got these grand, sweeping designs for how he's going to wind up eventually burning the world and getting revenge for all of the various things that ultimately set him off - he can be really impatient and hot-headed at times. To the point where he'll plow on ahead and try to pick a fight with someone and be determined to win, even if he's being advised that it'd be far better for him to wait for another opportunity. Of course, if he were receiving orders from someone like Gaav who had actually HAD earned his trust a great deal, he would have probably stood down(even though he still would've likely argued some). The situation above that is being referenced here, the retreat order had been given by Almayce, someone who hadn't had NEARLY the history that Gaav had had with Valgaav, and was still in that stage of Valgaav being fairly suspicious that Almayce was using him.

He does have a tendency to latch onto people who are from situations similar to his own, as Gaav had done with him. That said, both of his main subordinates were cases of happening across oppressed and abused beastmen and giving them a chance to ally with him and have a new life and maybe a chance at revenge, when they'd otherwise have nothing to go back to. It's one of the easier ways to get past his issues of trust, honestly.

Suspicion is a survival mechanism. One that makes a lot of sense with his background, but not so much in terms of practical day-to-day living, even if it had ensured his safety and survival for a very long time.

His view of the world in general is a fairly dim one, where it's him and his allies against the world. His trust issues run EXTREMELY DEEP and even if the appearance is outwardly that he's on good terms with someone, the odds are ridiculously high that he's still sleeping with one eye open around them. The dim worldview is a direct result of having had the opportunity to live through tragedy after tragedy. First, his people(the ancient dragons) were all systematically killed off by the golden dragons(who counted themselves as Servants of the Gods). Then, he found an anchor in the form of Gaav who'd taken him on as a general. It's worth noting here that Gaav was a Mazoku/Monster(Which are basically the demons for that world), which was the opposite alignment of what Valgaav was originally. Furthermore, Gaav had been on the run from HIS people. That said, Gaav and Valgaav really were pretty much just relying on each other for the sake of survival at first. It eventually grew into a much more stable friendship, but that was where its roots were. It's also worth noting that he had to endure the fairly routine levels of backstabbing and manipulation that was common in Monster interactions as yet another fact of life.

Over the course of years spent with Gaav, Valgaav had started to stabilize and get to where his issues weren't too crushingly bad...Only for Gaav to be killed off, causing any progress at all he'd made on that front to unravel and THEN some.

For the most part, given the nature of the betrayals he's experienced and bore witness to, he really does tend to see things in the perspective of "It's only a matter of time before people turn on you and betray you". In spite of this, he is amply willing to make bargains of convenience/of mutual benefit. His lack of trust in the other party does simply mean that he's more likely to do what he thinks is the right course of action in spite of what is said. It also means that he's fully expecting that other party to betray him or that the other party is simply using him with the plan of discarding or destroying him once he's done whatever they needed from him.

Namely, the key to getting past Valgaav's issues is proving that you are actually invested in him as a person. Something significant like the way that Gaav had stepped in to save his life on that one day, is definitely a good example of something like that. Once someone does manage to get past his issues a mile-wide, though, he will be ridiculously loyal to them. In fact, in canon, he's seen being INCREDIBLY upset by the revelation that Gravos, his subordinate, was killed.

More than just being upset, however, he DOES take insults to his people VERY seriously. In fact, he's far more likely to react if you were to insult his Lord Gaav, who'd been a loyal ally of his for some 900 years, than if you were to insult HIM. Furthermore, the ridiculous loyalty extends as far as still trying to act in someone's interests, even if they are now deceased. In fact, most of his vengeful rage circles back to him being upset about the people he care about being hurt or killed, to the point where he would actually be often willing to throw his life away if it meant getting the revenge he's after.

5-10 Key Character Traits: Loyal, Emotional(even though he'd never admit it No seriously he'd get angry at you if you pointed out how moody he was), Vengeful/wrathful, Proud/Prideful, Ambitious, Bitter, Stubborn, Cynical, Troubled/Wounded, Sympathetic to other outcasts
